The Hwa Chong Photographic Society, also informally known as Photog Soc, is one of the oldest CCAs in the HCI College Section. Since its establishment in 1974 upon the opening of Hwa Chong Junior College, the Photographic Society has been actively providing its photography services for all major school events. Be it a concert, the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations or even special ceremonies — the Photographic Society has it all covered.
We have CCA sessions every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. In these sessions, the Executive Committee trains CCA members in the technical and artistic aspects of photography. These include, but are not limited to: types of cameras, types of lenses, exposure, depth of field, composition, and how to “see” light.
Our training covers both breadth and depth — we discuss a wide range of genres from documentary to fine art to sports, as well as appreciate and analyse prominent photographers’ works within each genre. However, as much as we appreciate artistic diversity, our core responsibility remains to provide event coverage for the school. Hence, our training places a larger emphasis on event, documentary and editorial photography, so that our members are able to meet the needs of the school professionally. As practical training, we also organise photo outings to places of interest or historical significance around Singapore. Through a mix of theory, practice and critique, we aim to build a community of student photographers fully committed to their craft.
Members get full access to our extensive inventory of photography equipment, which includes Canon and Nikon full-frame DSLRs, constant-aperture telephoto and ultra-wide-angle lenses, as well as Elinchrom monolights for studio work. (So you don’t need to own a camera in order to join us!) In addition, we offer a wide range of resources to members if they want to participate in photo competitions or embark on personal projects. Members also get various opportunities to get their works exhibited.
For more information, please contact us through Facebook (facebook.com/hcphotogsoc) or email (hcphotogsoc@gmail.com). If you wish to meet us in person, do visit our booth at the Open House and CCA Orientation. Our friendly members will gladly clear your doubts and share their personal experiences with you!
Do you have a strong passion for photography? Do you want to push your photography skills to the next level? Most importantly, do you want to serve the school?
If you do, the Photographic Society is the right place for you!
