A collective of harmonica aficionados eager to play our way into the hearts of our audience, the Hwa Chong Harmonica Band embraces all who have the passion to make music, regardless of aptitude or background! Its humble beginnings began in 1974 when the band was formed by a group of students obsessed with the harmonica and its music. Since its establishment, the Hwa Chong Harmonica Band has strived to maintain its tradition of excellence. In the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2013, under the tutelage of renowned harmonicist Mr. Tang Yuen Wai, the band has emerged as the only one of the participating junior colleges to obtain the Certificate of Distinction and has continued to maintain our highest standards in SYF 2015.
Most, if not all, members learn the instrument from scratch. It is the dedication of each and every band member and the warm CCA culture that promises this journey to be both enriching and fulfilling.
You might be wondering, what kind of music, do we make? Only Chinese songs? Nope! It’s about time we quell that often preconceived notion that the harmonica is only used to accompany Chinese songs! The plethora of genres that we explore, from groovy pop hits to essential classics to musical scores to Disney songs, the types of music we explore remains boundless, and this variety never fails to add colour to the band’s playing.
The Hwa Chong Harmonica Band will continue to follow our seniors’ footsteps, to build a close-knitted family of budding harmonica talents.
