The Hwa Chong Symphonic Band (also known as HCBand) began humbly as a small military band in 1974 and has since then flourished into the full symphonic band that it is today.

The band is made up of 3 main sections, Woodwinds, Brass and percussion, each with varying timbre. The woodwinds sing long, beautiful melodies, while the brasses' noble sound quality enhances the music majestically. The percussion performs a variety of tasks such as keeping pulse and adding extra colours to the music. Together, we perform our music passionately, as one band.

Under the baton of resident conductor Mr. Darence Leng, we have gone on to clinch a Gold award at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) in 2009, a Silver award in 2011 and the Certificate of Distinction in 2013 and 2015. We have also won the Gold award in the 2014 and 2016 National Band Competition.

In recognition of our high musical standards, we have been invited to perform in many biannual SYF Band Presentations since 1980. In 2016, we were invited to perform at the Istana.

HCBand holds at least one annual concert, testament to its members’ passion for music and their eagerness to share it. The band has also collaborated with other performing arts CCAs in concerts.

In addition, the band actively hosts and participates in exchanges with like-minded overseas peers to broaden their perspectives.

With the determination and effort put in by all the band members as well as the school’s continual support, HCBand will continue striving for excellence as a band, and let our love for music live on.
