Basketball is a team sport played by two teams of five players. It may be played on an indoor or outdoor basketball court. The Hwa Chong basketball team is recognised as one of the heavyweights in the ‘A’ Division, having won the National ‘A’ Division Basketball Championship numerous times. In fact, the team enjoyed a championship-winning streak for 9 years.
Members of the team will represent the school and participate in the annual National ‘A’ Division Basketball Championship, pitting themselves against teams from other junior colleges. Competitive team members can expect to attend trainings that are thrice a week. The competitive team is coached by our experienced coach and Mr Michael Wong, who is also the teacher in-charge.
Our CCA also aims to promote basketball to the student body, since it is a sport that can easily be played with the many basketball courts around the Hwa Chong campus.
Basketball is more than just a game. By playing basketball, one can learn essential values such as respect, commitment, team work, and leadership. Members of the team learn to trust one another and in doing so, they forge long-lasting friendships. Players learn to rise from defeat and overcome challenges, strengthening their resilience. Not only does basketball develop one’s physical fitness, it also builds one’s character.
